Beaver wetlands create high-quality trout habitat. The dams capture sediment, which helps keep downstream gravel beds clean for spawning. Dams and ponds also push water underground, where it flows downstream and reemerges fresh and cool (called hyporheic flow). Trout stay cool in these cold-water pockets, then move into sun-warmed shallows to feed on the abundant invertebrates beaver ponds support. The quiet water around beaver dams means less energy fighting currents and more energy growing. Trout get big in beaver wetlands!

A winter haven

Beaver ponds are insulated by a stable layer of surface ice all winter, protecting fish from the violent conditions that form in open streams — where slushy frazil ice and submerged anchor ice can harm or kill trout. When temperatures drop, trout look for beaver ponds to wait out the cold months in safety.

Beavers taught trout to jump!

Beaver dams may look like an obstacle to humans. However, trout are strong swimmers capable of leaping distances many times their own length. Unlike concrete dams, beaver dams are complex, with a myriad of flow pathways. Millennia of coexistence have given trout plenty of time to master navigating beaver dams.

Although a lot of these benefits can apply more broadly to many fish, the evolution of these trout species has been influenced by beaver habitat: Oncorhynchus apache, Oncorhynchus clarkii, Oncorhynchus gilae, Oncorhynchus mykiss, Salmo salar, Salmo trutta, Salvelinus confluentus, Salvelinus fontinalis, Salvelinus malma, Thymallus arcticus.
